One of the questions we hear most often is, “How do I know I’m getting a fair price?”
It’s a great question and one that deserves an honest answer.
Unlike furniture, electronics, or many consumer goods, original artwork doesn’t have a set universal pricing formula. There isn’t a standard price per square inch or an industry wide calculator that determines what every painting should cost.
Art is both a commodity and a collectible, making its value far more nuanced.
Instead, pricing is influenced by a combination of factors including:
    ●    The artist’s career stage and reputation
    ●    Gallery representation
    ●    Exhibition history
    ●    Supply and demand
    ●    Rarity of the work or collection
    ●    Medium and materials
    ●    Size and complexity
    ●    Previous sales history
    ●    Secondary market and auction results
    ●    Collector interest and market momentum

Private negotiations between collectors, galleries, and designers also play a significant role in determining an artwork’s market value. Because many of these transactions happen behind closed doors, pricing can sometimes feel mysterious to new collectors.
The good news? It doesn’t have to stay that way.

Understanding Value:
When evaluating the price of an original painting, it’s helpful to look at the artist’s body of work as a whole rather than a single piece.
Ask questions such as:
    ●    Has the artist consistently sold work at this price point?
    ●    Are they represented by galleries?
    ●    Have they exhibited their work publicly?
    ●    Is this collection limited or particularly rare?
    ●    Is the work original, one-of-a-kind, and professionally presented?
    ●    Does the price reflect the artist’s current career momentum?

As you begin to understand an artist’s history, you’ll often notice consistency in pricing based on factors such as size, medium, complexity, and exclusivity.

The Secondary Market:
One of the clearest indicators of value comes from the secondary market (the resale of artwork through collectors, galleries, or auction houses.)
While previous sales never guarantee future value, they provide insight into what collectors have been willing to pay. Just like real estate, an artwork’s market value is ultimately established when someone chooses to purchase it.

So… Am I Getting a Good Deal?
While there is no single formula that determines the “correct” price of a painting, there are a few questions you can ask yourself:
   ●    Is the pricing consistent with the artist’s career stage?
   ●    Can the gallery clearly explain how the artwork is priced?
   ●    Does the price make sense considering the size, medium, rarity, and quality of the work?
   ●    Does it align with the artist’s previous sales and market history?

If the answer is yes, you’re likely looking at a fair and potentially good value.
